French love / like

How to use "aimer" in french

In french, we have only one word to speak about something we "like" or something we "love". However, the meaning of "aimer" can be different when we add it an adverb. Speaking about objects, there's no big deal. But if you speak to your girlfriend it's better to be accurate, if you know what I mean !

Object (food, movies, cars, clothes...)

J'aime le chocolat / J'aime bien le chocolat = I like chocolate
J'aime beaucoup le chocolat = I like chocolate very much
J'aime énormément le chocolat = I love chocolate

Speaking about / to a person

Je t'aime = I love you

Je t'aime bien= I like you (never say that to your lover ! )

J'aime bien ce chanteur = I like this singer

J'aime beaucoup ce chanteur = I like this singer very much

If you tell you your lover or a member of your family "je t'aime beaucoup"
in some way it means that you "like" or "love" her / him very much but
only like some kind of "good friend" !
