I'm afraid that these words are NOT synonyms and the differences are FAR from tiny.

'Expect' and 'anticipate' are similar in meaning. We use these talk about what you THINK is going to happen. If you say 'I expect he'll win', you think this is very likely to happen, but we don't know how you feel about it. We don't know whether you want him to win or not.

If you 'anticipate' something, you expect it to happen and are therefore prepared for it.

'Hope' is different. If you say 'I hope he wins', we know that this is something you WANT to happen, but we don't know whether you think this is likely or not.

'Wish' is used in a completely different way. We use 'wish' for hypothetical situations, when you express a desire for something to be DIFFERENT ( as in 'I wish I could help you') or a REGRET about something which didn't happen as you would like it to have happened. For example, if you are unhappy about a result, you might say 'I wish he had won' or 'I wish he hadn't won.'

So, as you can see, the differences are not 'tiny' at all. They are completely different words. You cannot substitute one for the other.
