How do I feel about different Chinese accent? Hi, My name is Mia and I am learning Chinese now, although I can write good English but I am still looking for some improvement, especially in writing. Similar to English, there are different Chinese speakers from the world and I have interacted with some of them. Today, I am going to share with you, how do I feel about different Chinese accents? 1.) Hong Konger's accent: I believe when most Hong Kongers speak Mandarin, the way we speak it sound really like Cantonese. It is very easy to recognise our accent as the way we speak Mandarin is highly influenced by our mother tongue, which is Cantonese in this case. 2.) Taiwanese's accent: Taiwanese accent is my favourite accent. It is a very pleasant accent to listen to. Taiwanese girl has a cute accent and Taiwanese guy has friendly accent. It sounds very formal compare to HK's accent. 3.) Northern Chinese accent: Northern Chinese accent is kind of interesting accent. Sometimes I feel like they are having tongue twister when they talk, it is something that I can never be able to learn from. Northern Chinese accent is a kind of passionate accent that you can feel it when you hear it. They speak Chinese loud and clear. 4.) Southern Chinese accent: I think Southern Chinese accent is soft compare to Northern Chinese accent. And they don't talk in tongue twister style. Personally, I can understand Southern Chinese accent better, maybe it is because that we have seen a lot of tourists from Guangdong province and we are somehow get used to their accent. 5.) Singaporean Chinese accent: I was in Singapore for 1 year as an exchange student in 2013. People there speak Chinese(Mandarin) too. However, they speak Chinese with some mixed accent with English and Hokkien. If they don't know how to use the word in Chinese, they put in some English words instead. So when you hear their speech, sometimes you can hear it is a combination of Chinese(Mandarin) + English + Chinese(Hokkien). It somehow reminds me the way we speak Cantonese. We use English words sometimes compare to people from Guangzhou, who rarely use English word when they speak Cantonese. 6.) Malaysian Chinese accent: When I was in Singapore as exchange student, I had some Malaysian friends as well. Even though Singapore and Malaysia are very close to each other, they speak Mandarin with different accent. They don't put in English in their Mandarin. However they use some "malay" word or local slangs in their sentence. Even though it sounds informal to me.
