Ramadan Bairam
Today is the first day of Sugar (or Ramadan) Bairam in Turkey. This festival has a special place and meaning in the life of our (or maybe Muslim, or Turkish) people.
Meals of Bairam are prepared on the day before. Meals of Bairam generally consist of bread , soup, "Sarma" (a dish of minced meat and rice wrapped up in vine leaves), "Yahni" (meat stew with unions), pilaf, pie, "Sütlaç" (rice-milk) and "Baklava" (Sweet pastry generally cut into diamond-shaped pieces). On the morning of Bairam everybody wakes up early and puts on their new dresses clothes.(The general term "dress" can mean "clothing" of either sex. "Dresses" will always mean women's skirts.)
All family members sit at the table and eat the Bairam meal. Children are made happy by giving them money. Then children of neighbours, elders, friends are visited and their Bairam is congratulated.
Very well done.

The Bairam meal is prepared on the day before and generally consists of bread, soup, "Sarma" (a dish of minced meat and rice wrapped up in grape leaves), "Yahni" (meat stew with unions), pilaf, pie, "Sütlaç" (rice pudding) and "Baklava" (Sweet pastry generally cut into diamond-shaped pieces). On the morning of Bairam everybody wakes up early and puts on their new clothes. All family members sit at the table and eat the Bairam meal. We give children money to make them happy, and visit the children of neighbours, elders, and friends to wish them a happy Bairam.
