English: Animal Babies
I was surprised to learn recently that many languages do not have specific names for animal babies but simply use a diminutive term taken from the adult animal. As such English learners have often not come across the names of common animal babies. So, here are a few for your Notebooks:
1. A baby cat is called a kitten.
2. A baby dog is called a puppy.
3. A baby cow is called a calf.
4. A baby horse is called a foal.
5. A baby goat is called a kid (the same word as an alternative to children!)
6. A baby pig is called a piglet.
7. A baby bird is called a chick.
8. A baby deer is called a fawn.
9. A baby sheep is called a lamb.
10. A baby elephant is called a calf (the same as a baby cow).
11. A baby lion, bear or wolf is called a cub.
I would say these are the top ones to learn. Please add others that you know.
Take care,
Josephine

The same goes for groups of animals: A herd of cattle, bison, zebra, and most other hoofed, herbivore species. A pack of wolves, feral dogs, hyenas, lions ??? (I think maybe only female lions are truly social, and then maybe only when hunting). A school of fish. A colony of feral cats (again cats are really that social but the word still exists so I guess sometimes they kind of stick together). A swarm of mosquitos or locusts.A colony of bees, ants or termites (this word usually implies these insects within their hive or home that they build as a society). A colony of bacteria (not technically an animal). Most primates are social and live in groups, both apes and monkeys, alhtough I can't at the moment think of what terms are used for them. And then of course there are word used for a group of baby animals that are siblings. A litter of kittens or puppies (domestic cats and dogs). A pride of lions cubs. I have had questions conversations with other native english speakers about which word is correct for some kind of animal. I wonder if any English language student will read this and benefit, seeing as how you're British, although it is possible there are difference in this between British and American english.

Oh, really? I know so many people who call everything a baby animal or use the diminuitive term although there exist other words for those babies in their languages. But they just don't know them.
