三、啃老族 (kĕn lăo zú) Parent-dependent adults
Origin and Usage
“ 啃老族 (kĕn lăo zú )” refers to a group of adults who have a common feature: They stay at home instead of search for jobs. This group is also called “ NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training)” in the U.K. “ 啃(kĕn)” means to gnaw. Here it is used to vividly describe the group’s reliance on their parents. “ 老” means the old, the aged. Overall, “ 啃老族(kĕn lăo zú ) refers to those people who don't work and totally live off their parents.
Who are they?
“ 啃老族 (kĕn lăo zú) ” is mainly made up of the following groups: “ 大学毕业生 (dà xué bì yè shēng) university graduates” who don't want to work or are too picky with the job choices, p eople who often “ 跳槽(tiào cáo) change jobs,” and people who are “ 失业(shī yè ) jobless. ”

Yuè lái yuè duō de qīng nián jiā rù dào bú shàng xué yòu bù gōng zuò de kĕn lăo zú .

Origin and Usage
“ 草根(căo gēn)” literally means grass roots. But nowadays, it became a symbol of culture. “ 草根 (căo gēn)” is used to define people coming from “ 基层 (jī céng) the basic level group” and “ 大众 (dà zhòng) the masses,” “ 草根 (căo gēn)” is the opposite to “ 主流文化(zhŭ liú wén huà ) the mainstream culture” and “ 精英文化 (jīng yīng wén huà ) elite culture. ” “ 草根(căo gēn)” can also be used along with words such as “ 草根明星(căo gēn míng xīng) a star from the masses,” or “ 草根总统 (căo gēn zóng tŏng) a president with a common background.”
