My answer is a bit like Ivan's one. My advice to you is to read more and more in the language you want to learn. Personally, that's what I'm trying to do because that's the only way to understand clearly how to use a word. You cannot learn a language by heart...

That's simple! Just never learn separate words without the context as you’ll forget them quickly. Words must be related to the context, otherwise they just won't make sense as well as the study of them.
