Five paragraph analysis on Fishman , the context ( diglossia ) Jashua Fishman is one of the linguists who has tried to explain the notion of diglossia . His contribution to diglossia is in relation with the field of multilingualism. For Fishman bilingualism exists with and without bilingualism, also there is a situation in which both of them may not exist. For Fishman both bilingualism and diglossia exist when a whole population speaks two languages, and for this situation he gives the example of of Spanish and Guarani; here it is bilingual because the majority speaks both languages and it is diglossia because each language stands and functions differently from the other . Bilingualism can be found alone when it is refered to an individual's ability to communicate in multiple varieties and without diglossia if there is no social funtion of each variety . As we have seen that diglissia can exists with bilingualism , also disglissia exists without bilingualism, this happens when two or more communities are united religiously politically or economically , but separated at the socio-cultural level . Fishman's examlpe for this situation is , in pre- world war 1 when the european elites intercommunicate with their contrymen via translators or interpreters . Fishman has mentioned that neither diglissia nor bilingualism exist theoritically in small islolate speech communities , and it is hard to find an example of this , because it is rare but theoritically possible . It is so important to understans the notion of diglissia to understand better our linguistic communities , and may be to find solutions of the problems that my arise in this field.
