🚀 The "It Depends" Technique (The Balanced Approach)
When an examiner asks you a general question, avoid giving a simple "Yes" or "No" answer. Instead, use the phrase "It depends" to explore the topic from two different perspectives. This strategy significantly boosts your scores in Fluency and Grammatical Range.
Example:
❓ Question: Is it better to live in a big city or a small town?
❌ Average Answer (Band 5-6):
"I think big cities are better because they have more jobs and shops. Small towns are too quiet and boring for me."
✅ High-Score Answer (Band 7.5+):
1️⃣ The Smart Start: "Well, honestly, I think it depends on a person's stage of life or their personality."
2️⃣ Perspective One: "On the one hand, for young professionals, a big city is ideal because of the career opportunities and the vibrant nightlife."
3️⃣ Perspective Two: "On the other hand, for retirees or people who prefer a peaceful lifestyle, a small town would be much more suitable due to the lower stress levels and cleaner air."
✨ Why is this a game-changer for your score? ✨
1. Mastering Contrast: By using phrases like "On the one hand / On the other hand," you improve your Coherence and Cohesion score.
2. Easier Ideation: You no longer have to worry about which side is "correct." You discuss both, which gives you more time to speak and naturally increases your fluency.
3. Advanced Lexis: This structure allows you to naturally drop in high-level vocabulary like Ideal, Vibrant, Retirees, and Suitable.
