Student uniform serves in many ways at school, including ease of recognition and encouraging unity. School children who wear a uniform are easily identified by teachers and neighbors, which is especially beneficial in preventing them getting involved in crime and trouble when they are outside school, such as on excursions or when commuting (commuting is used for workers not schoolchildren) Additionally, wearing the same clothes bolsters a sense of belonging and responsibility. Uniform can make children feel they are a decent member of the community, which encourages good discipline and helps them grow into mature adults. On the other hand, some drawbacks of school uniforms are the restriction on the freedom of appearance, the expensive purchase price, and the unpractical nature of the garment. First, students should enjoy the right to express themselves through their clothes. Forcing uniforms upon them might make them feel oppressed. Second, school uniforms are expensive because providers do not face fair competition once schools decide on the supplier. As a result, the price remains high and poorer parents might end up buying one at a second hand shop which can leave their children embarassed. Finally, school uniforms tend to be hard to wash, heavy and not breatheable. In fact, many Japanese junior-high schoolers wear a PE kit on a daily basis because it is more comfortable than a shirt and trousers or a skirt.
