Important facts first: -- 'solo' usually implies 'alone' -- 'soltanto' usually implies 'uniqueness' Example: e1i) qui sono soltanto io, ma non mi sento solo e1e) Here I am the only one, but I don't feel alone. e2i) Chi c'e' in casa ? {Solo io, soltanto io} (nessun significato di solitudine) e2e) Who is at home ? Only me. e3i) Dove vai {tutto solo, solo soletto} con quel pesante zaino ? e3e) Where are you going by yourself with that heavy backpack ? (no meaning of loneliness) e4i) che ci fai qui sulla spiaggia {da solo, solo soletto} ? e4e) what are you doing here on the beach by yourself (a meaning of loneliness is implied) Typical expressions: Penso, {solo, soltanto} a te Amo {solo, soltanto} te. Here the meaning is (obviously) 'uniqueness'.
