"But for the rain we would have gone for a walk long ago." I don't get this sentence. It's a sentence from the textbook, so there's no context. First of all I don't understand what does "for the rain" mean. Perhaps when I get this part I'll realize the whole of the sentence. Thx in advance)

It can be re-phrased as "If it were not raining" or "If it had not been raining". The sentence is a slightly different way of saying "We would have gone for a walk long ago, but it was raining" I hope that helps!
