"pez gordo" = persona con mucho poder e influencia y muy acaudalada. También se les dice así a los jefes de las bandas de las mafias en el mundo del delito.

'Es un pez gordo' Aquí significa que es una persona muy importante en el ambiente o lugar que él se desempeña.

The Lynne's answer is not correct in spanish of Spain. "Un pez gordo" is somebody very important.
