Sono sinonimi ma si usano in diversi registri linguistici: "prostituta" è più politically correct e può essere usato in un contesto formale (come "passeggiatrice" e "meretrice"); mentre "puttana" o "lucciola" si usano in un registro più informale e anche volgare (naturalmente dipende dal contesto).
Al posto di queste parole spesso si usano espressioni come: "buona donna" o "donna dai facili costumi".
