spanish: "nuevo ano" or "ano nuevo"?
Recently I've learned the following spanish sentences (accents omitted):
Brindemos por el nuevo ano.
Tienes buenos propositos para el ano nuevo?
My question is when you say "nuevo ano" and when "ano nuevo".

We use "Año Nuevo" exclusively to a) refer to the celebration of the beginning of a new year on January 1st, OR b) in the popular saying "Año nuevo, vida nueva". Elsewhere you must say "nuevo año", e.g., "El nuevo año ha traído más dificultades económicas" (NOT "*El Año Nuevo ha traído más dificultades económicas"). On the other hand, it is vital that you write "año", not "ano", since "ano" means "anus", "asshole"! :-)
