flashcards VS vocabulary notebooks What is your opinion about these two very common study tools? Which one do you think is better? Which one do you use? Maybe some have not seen the type of vocabulary notebook I am referring to, so here is a picture. It can have two columns or three columns (if you need to write an IPA transcription / Pinyin / Kana) http://quovadisblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/005.jpg I have just RE-discovered vocabulary notebooks and found out that they work very much like flashcards if you cover columns with your hand when you test yourself. You can get more words into a notebook, then if you were to write each word on a separate flashcard and you can write series of words in sequence when exploring different words in the same category (all the colours in the particular language, or words that all use a particular kanji). You are also less likely to lose your notebook, which can happen with flashcards. But there is the issue of bulk, it's more heavy to carry. And you cannot rearrange the words when testing yourself, which you can do with flashcards.

Hi, I think it depends on the language you are studying, and how you learn. When I was learning Japanese (kanji) I made flashcards using index cards. On one side I wrote the word in kanji, and on the other I wrote the pronounciation, other words using the same kanji and some example sentences like you have done in your vocab notebook. These were fairly decent sized, and I kept them all in a ziplock bag. This might work for you. Alternatively, buy some Japanese stationary items designed for language learning. There are many kinds out there, and there is probably something you would find that is a good compromise between flashcards and vocab notebooks. In the end, these things are just an aid. They help you revise, but unless you learn visually, they don't particularly make it easier to learn vocabulary. I found the same effects from rote learning: just writing words over and over again on scraps of paper, and actually found the whole exercise of making the cards a waste of time. (I had to do it for school though).

Unless you have a very good memory, flashcards won't help you.
