'tidak' & 'bukan' has the same meaning which is no . It is just which one is more suitable to use in sentence & which one sounds more natural than the other. I'm a native Malay speaker. I can help you in Malay if you want :)

Tidak means no. It's the same as in Indonesian.

actually, the meaning of ''no'' is ''tidak'' & ''bukan'' But, this is what happen to language when they translate directly from English to Malay without looking at the grammar or words. Here is the example. I DO NOT understand = Saya TIDAK faham. He IS NOT a doctor. = Dia BUKAN seorang doktor. Who did this !? NO, I DID NOT = TIDAK BUKAN is more to '' isn't, aren't, wasn't weren't & am not'' and if you want to deny any fact, you will use BUKAN Eg. I am not a lawyer. = Saya BUKAN seorang peguam. while TIDAK is more to '' Doesn't, don't, didn't '' and if you want to deny verb. Eg. I DON'T know. = saya TIDAK tahu. that just some of the simple. sometimes, it's changed. Depends on the grammar and sentence. If you're confuse, try to ask somebody who know how to speak Malay.

Zainah tidak ada di sini. Zainah 没有在这里。 Dia bukan anak saya.他不是我的儿子. tidak:不 Dia tidak suka makan durian.他不喜欢吃榴莲 meaning of "tidak" and "bukan" almost same,but we still got a bit different.
