Here is a good occasion. I visited my girlfriend (ex now) and I met her mother. It doesn't matter about the place, if you are with someone important, you need to be very polite. In England, you also have to be polite to strangers, but can be rude to your friends. So to be polite, I used her last name, not her first name (in England we always call our friends or people we meet by their first name). I also shook her hand and I was careful to say 'thankyou' and to say 'please'.
