Sì, sono sinonimi e non ci sono differenze. Phon / fon si usano più spesso nel linguaggio parlato!
Personalmente uso phon!

L'origine del termine phon e` nella lingua tedesca, e indica un vento caldo;
in realta` il vento 'phon' e` un interessante fenomeno fisico, tipico delle Alpi sul
versante Nord, cioe` l'aria si scalda nello scendere di quota.
