Zhong 中 means noon/middle. As in zhongwu 中午 afternoon etc. So does china 中国 mean middle country?

you have made a similar mistake just like "shuiguo"
中国 is a proper noun and can not be seperated
only some of the words can be explained seperately
"中" has many meanings,and is only a bound morpheme in China,it has to bound with other morphemes to form a word

no 中国doesn't means middle countty,instead it means people republic of china.中国is the short of 中华人民共和国

那是因为古时候的的中国人认为我们的国家是在地球的中央，所以就用“中”这个字~~~the ancient chinese though that our country is in the middle of the earth,so the use "zhong"
