做吃 isn't a Chinese words, they are two verbs
while
烹调 is a common Chinese word

做吃的 is colloquial style，we don't use it in our essay.烹调 is professional.There are a word “煮饭” we always use.

做吃的=做饭 ：Ordinary people do dinner
