Do I write all the verbs in a sentence in the subjunctive?
Hi there,
When a sentence needs to use the subjunctive, do I need to use the subjunctive for ALL the verbs in it, for example;
‘I hope that this means they are here’
‘Spero che questo SIGNIFICA che SIANO qui’
or just for the first verb;
‘Spero che questo SIGNIFICA che sono qui’
I can’t find anything in the grammar books to answer this question so any help would be very gratefully received.
Thanks
Kayleigh

Spero che questo calo della temperatura significhi che nevichi (cong.) e che la neve sia (cong.) buona.
Qui le subordinate sono due e paritetiche (unite da /e/), quindi il cong. e` necessario in entrambe le proposizioni.

Come ti dicevo gli italiani sbagliano, e infatti HO SBAGLIATO :
Spero che questo calo della temperatura significhi che nevichera` e che la neve sara` buona.
Qui le due subordinate paritetiche (unite da /e/) di livello 3 sono
all'indicativo futuro.
Scusami per favore.

Spero che questo SIGNIFICHI che sono qui.
terza persona singolare presente:
significa: indicativo
significhi: congiuntivo
La frase subordinata di terzo livello va nel modo indicativo,
questo e` certo, anche se ogni tanto si sente uno sbaglio con il
congiuntivo.
Altri esempi non te li so fare, al momento.
Una domanda interessante!
