Sì, lo puoi usare per dire che hai non hai fatto in tempo a prendere qualcosa:
Ho perso il treno
Ho perso l'autobus
e anche:
Ho perso un'occasione (I missed a chance)
Lo puoi usare per oggetti
Ho perso il mio portafoglio (I have lost my wallet)
oppure oggetti immateriali, come la memoria
L'amnesia è la perdita della memoria (the amnesia is loss of memory)
Ha battuto la testa e ha perso la memoria (He has been hit his head and lost his memory)
perdere peso (lose weight)
perdere (smarrire) la strada:
Mi sono perso (I'm lost)
Mi sono perso in questo labirinto (I'm lost in this labyrinth)
incontri sportivi
Ha perso la partita (he lost the match)

Si`, a differenza che in inglese lo puoi usare esattamente con il significato
inglese di 'to miss'.
Esempi di diverso significato di 'perdere':
1) ho perso il treno perche` non ho messo l'iora legale nel mio orologio; sono proprio stupido!
2a) Perche` camminiamo da mezz'ora ?
2b) Ho perso la macchina in questo enorme parcheggio, mi dispiace, non riesco a trovarla.
