Should / Should Have In Italian
What is the best way to express the meaning of "should" and "should have" in Italian? For instance, if I wanted to write the following sentences in Italian:

1. You should see the movie "Captain America: Winter Soldier" if you haven't already.

2. He should have left earlier so we would be on time for this movie. (This guy is supposed to meet up with us to see the movie.)

1 tu dovresti vedere il film "capitan amarica: the winter soldier" se non l'hai già fatto.

2. tu saresti dovuto uscire prima e non saremmo arrivati in ritardo per vedere questo film.

Should + verb: condizionale presente di dovere + infinito del verbo
Should + have + verb: condizionale passato di dovere + infinito del verbo

If your mother tongue is English, it's tempting to translate the 2nd one (you should have...) as 'dovresti aver...', but that's not the way it's naturally said in Italian at all.

You should go = dovresti andare
You should do = dovresti fare

You should have gone = saresti dovuto andare  (auxiliary: essere)
You should have done = avresti dovuto fare  (auxiliary: avere)

But never say 'dovresti aver fatto' or 'dovresti essere andato'.

In colloquial Italian you could also say:
1) Devi proprio vedere "Captain America: Winter Soldier" se non sei ancora andato
2) Se fosse uscito per tempo non avremmo fatto tardi per il film

(We leave out the subject, you get that by the ending of the verb)

"Should" and "should have", in the Italian corresponding form, change with each subject you use:

- Should
io dovrei + Infinitive
tu dovresti + Infinitive
egli dovrebbe + Infinitive
noi dovremmo + Infinitive
voi dovreste + Infinitive
essi dovrebbero + Infinitive

- Should have
io avrei dovuto + Infinitive
tu avresti dovuto + Infinitive
egli avrebbe dovuto + Infinitive
noi avremmo dovuto + Infinitive
voi avreste dovuto + Infinitive
essi avrebbero dovuto + Infinitive

BUT you could also use, with some verbs like "partire, andare, arrivare..."
io sarei dovuto + Infinitive
tu saresti dovuto + Infinitive
egli sarebbe dovuto + Infinitive
noi saremmo dovuti + Infinitive
voi sareste dovuti + Infinitive
essi sarebbero dovuti + Infinitive

Ex: "Sarei dovuto arrivare alle 10 ma sono rimasto bloccato nel traffico" = "I should have arrived by 10 but I got stuck in a traffic jam"
and not "avrei dovuto arrivare alle 10.."
