If you can use 'while', you can use 'whilst'. There is no difference in meaning. We use them interchangeably in British English, though 'whilst' can sometimes sound more formal.

It's exactly the same as 'while', but more old-fashioned.

Good point, Amul. I hadn't thought of that, I'd taken 'whilst' as my starting point and I was thinking about conjunctions. Thank for this.

While I agree, with the others, there is a small diffrence between the two: 'while' can be used nominally while 'whilst' cannot. For example: "I will be back in a while". In this context the two are not interchangeable.
