No, there is no rules. You can use whatever infinitive (not only "aver") in its truncated form as you like. You just have to pay attention to use only the truncated form with joined pronouns: "avermi", "averti", "avergli", "averle", "averci", "avervi", "averne", "averglielo", "avergliela", "avercene"... "averceglielo"

It seems to me that: 1. avere + <past. particle> usually becomes: aver + <past. particle> (but NOT needed) 2a. avere + <noun> 2b. avere + <sentence as direct complement> Keeps the /avere/ form. Examples: -- vorrei aver detto prima che .... -- cosa dici di aver sentito ? -- pensi di avere sempre ragione? -- che cosa ti importa di avere un nuovo televisore da 50 pollici e supe audio ultra moderno, non e` meglio risparmiare e avere la casa ogni tanto piena di amici ? - E' meglio avere una casa in montagna tutta bianca di neve oppure una macchina Ferrari tutta rossa dentro al garage ? Penso di non avere grande urgenza di risolvere questo quesito.

No, whic choose is depending of the sound in the sentance, otherwise you can use whic you want but usally the italian use "avere". This is valid for anyelse word in italian. The italian is a poetic language!
