I am reading a Chinese practice book and I am stuck on the specifics of this sentence:

*After the main character is called by a friend*
他回过头一看，有个男的骑自行车过来．

I understand that it means something along the lines of: He turned around to give a look, it is a man on a bike coming over.

But what is the direct translation of 回过头？ As far as I know, 回=return，过=go over, and 头=head. What are the specifics?
