¿En qué trabajas? ¿Cuál es tu profesión? Both of them are used in normal contexts. What you've been told is not, though. "Qué haces" is just "What do you do", which can be answered in multiple ways. If someone asked me "Qué haces" I wouldn't answer telling my job. "Qué trabajas tú" is ungrammatical, you shouldn't say that.

You can also ask: ¿A qué te dedicas? Someone can answer you that he/she works or he/she studies at the university, for example. It is a good question because you can have so many answers!

You can say.. Que haces? what do you do ( for a living) Or Que trabajas tu? What work do you do.. Remember to put question marks before and after the question though. Jo
