Qu'est-ce que = direct object (things) Ex. Qu' est-ce que tu manges? (What are you eating?)
Qui est-ce qui = subject (persons) Ex. Qui est-ce qui parle? (Who is talking?)
Qui est-ce que = direct object (persons) Ex. Qui est-ce que tu appelles? (Who are you calling?)
Qu'est-ce qui = subject (things) Ex. Qu' est-ce qui te preoccupe?
