hand in and submit Do both hand in and submit have the same meaning? Can I use them in a real conversation this way? I needed to submit my university entrance exam grade and high school grade to Heidelberg University for Masters program. They're sometimes interchangeable, but 'hand in' is more often used for when something literally changes hands, as when you give a homework assignment to a teacher. When it's done by mail or e-mail, 'submit' is more appropriate.

Well, here we have a question of register. "Hand in" is a phrasal verb, and it's comfortably used in a colloquial, everyday context. "Submit" has a Latin origin, so it's more appropriate for formal, business or academic contexts. We understand both to have the same meaning (more or less), but our choice depends on the context, ie. who we are actually talking to.
