Esercitare and Praticare
Could you tell me the difference between "esercitare" and "praticare"?
Mi sono esercitato al pianoforte.
Ho praticato il pianoforte.
What is the difference?
Thank you.

Esempi:
1a) Che lavoro fai?
1b) Per adesso faccio pratica in marina; vorrei tanto diventare capitano di una nave.
2a) Perche` non rispondi mai al telefono al mattino?
2b) Forse mi chiami mentre mi esercito a cantare, mi diverte molto.
3a) Prima dell'esame di matematica mi devo esercitare ancora, specialmente con gli integrali doppi.
Questo e` quello che ho capito io:
/fare pratica/ e /praticare/ si usano quando si impara anche dal contesto e
dalle altre persone.
/esercitarsi/ si usa quando si puo` procedere da soli, oppure con altre persone
allo stesso livello.
In genere pero` possono essere scambiati con significato uguale.
Ti servirebbero dozzine di esempi per capire bene il significato e il contesto di
utilizzo.

Actually there isn't a strong difference: they are two verbs that are just synonyms. Nevertheles, they need two different constructions:
1) ESERCITARSI + preposition "a/al" + noun.
2) PRATICARE ( we usually use it with the meaning of " to train, to improve, to practise" + OBJECT/ ADVERB (Pratico atletica leggera; pratico molto allenamento = mi sono esercitato molto)
