is this sentence right? Strange as it may be, sometimes I prefer staying at home and not going out with them

Yes sounds good and it has rather a nice way of saying, i would rather stay at home.

It sounds good, but if you see this on an exam, I think the intended answer is probably "I prefer staying at home to going out with them."
