I think it depends on your job and what kind of office you work in. If you need to communicate with foreigners from different countries it would help if you could speak good English.

It would depend on the company and, perhaps, on the type of job. If it's a job where there isn't a huge need to be able to communicate with coworkers (maybe certain manual labour jobs), I don't think it would be vital.. But I also think that not speaking the same language makes it more difficult to engage with coworkers, make friends, and fit into the company culture. Also, I guess it depends on the company: is it based in a majority English-speaking country? If so, speaking English would definitely help and it would probably be required. For other countries based in other countries, it will sometimes depend on their company culture. English has become so widespread than it is sometimes required in companies that are not based in an English-speaking country. I guess it also depends if you would be working mostly internally (speaking with coworkers who speak whatever the dominant language of the country or company is) or dealing mostly with colleagues outside of the company. For example, I have heard of English speakers working in Japanese companies who don't necessarily need perfectly fluent Japanese because they mainly interact with other English-speaking clients outside of the company (though they do still need a very, very good working level of Japanese!). These people are like the link between the English-speaking clients and the Japanese company. It really depends on a lot of things... But I hope that helps a little bit!
