I googled the entire phrase and found the original text. A 'wash' is a particular type of landscape in the Mojave Desert. It's very technical.  It has a very specific meaning in the technical field in question.  All your text is technical.  As the habitat is desert, it really is hard to guess.  I couldn't even see the term on a Google search. Check if the author has defined the term earlier in his or her own work.
