How to understand the sentences below? The damned little brat must be protected against her own idiocy, one says to one's self at such times. Others must be protected aginst her. It is a social necessity. And all these things are true. But a blind fury, a feeling of adult shame, bred of a longing for muscular release are the operatives. One goes on to the end. How to understand the words "against" in the sentences above? Could you replace it with another word? What's meant by "bred of" and "operatives" here. What does last "one" refer to?

"Against" can be replaced with "from". In this context it means that the one person is frustrated with the other person's behavior; they could hurt themselves or someone else with their actions and aren't behaving as society would deem acceptable. It implies that others need to be protected from that behavior. "Bred of" implies to start or be created and grow from something else. "Operatives" implies a result from something (like a surgery) There are also comparisons and references made between emotional and physical states (fury vs muscular) The fury has been building up and needs to be released. The fury/anger is the result of the build up of emotions and muscle tension. "One" can be used when speaking in a third person. The person is talking about the another person.
