Structures and interactions in the IgE network
The IgE molecule. IgE shares the same basic molecular
architecture as antibodies of other classes, with two
identical heavy chains and two identical light chains,
but, as illustrated in FIG. 1, the heavy ε‑chain contains
one more domain than the heavy γ‑chain of IgG.
The pair of Cε3 and Cε4 domains are homologous in
sequence, and similar in quaternary structure, to the
pair of Cγ2 and Cγ3 domains of IgG, so that it is the pair
of Cε2 domains, located in the position equivalent to
that occupied by the flexible hinge region of IgG, that is
the most obvious distinguishing feature of IgE.
