晨报,晚报,冰淇淋 and 冰激凌 Hi, 1) Can the words 晨报 (morning news) and 晚报 (evening news) only be referred to paper format (newspapers) or any format (i.e. TV news, radio news, etc.)? 2) Are 冰淇淋 and 冰激凌 used to refer to different types of ice cream? Thank you.

1) Usually and officially they refer to those in paper format only. But I've experienced others using them as news in any kind of format, including TV, radio and so on. 2) These are loanwords and they are just different translation of the same word "ice cream". However, on a side note, "霜淇淋" means "soft served' ice cream.

1) If you want to describe TV news (新闻), you may use 晨间新闻(早间新闻) or 晚间新闻。Because 新闻 is a bi-syllabic word, so it's preferred to use a bi-syllabic to pair with. However, if you say 早新闻/晚新闻 is also fine, but never 晨新闻 as it sounds weird. 2) No difference. Just two styles of translation. Meaning ice cream.

The previous answers are great. Just to add one comment. 冰淇淋 and 冰激凌 are the the different translations of the same thing. Choosing which one to use really depends on personal or regional preferences. I personally only use 冰淇淋 but I think both of them are commonly used in mainland China.

1. They are only referred to paper format (newspapers), coz 晨报 and 晚报 are abbreviated from 晨間報紙 and 晚間報紙。 If you would like to refer to other format, people tend to use 晨間新聞、晚間新聞 for TV / radio news. 2. 冰淇淋 and 冰激凌 means the same thing. Then you might ask what's the difference then? 冰淇淋 is commonly used mainly in Taiwan; 冰激凌 is commonly used in mainland China.

1) Can the words 晨报 (morning news) and 晚报 (evening news) only be referred to paper format (newspapers) or any format (i.e. TV news, radio news, etc.)? 单指纸质报纸。 2) Are 冰淇淋 and 冰激凌 used to refer to different types of ice cream? 完全是一个意思。这是个外来词,翻译的不同而已。
