"Without a clear motive that wasn't greed I couldn't imagine why a person would even think of a such thing. But If greed was a motivating factor, then no matter who the person was I'd have the the most epic internal battle on my hands."

Usually an epic internal battle would refer to some kind of dilemma the girl is having. Without reading the story, I can't say for sure, but I think she sympathizes with the thief. She probably thinks that, if she was in the thief's position, she might do the same thing. So it would be difficult for her to try to stop someone that she doesn't think did anything really wrong.
