the phrase "in the best light" That doesn't paint me in the best light. Is this a common expression? Does the word "paint" used proper in this sentence? Should I use "portray" instead?

Ive never heard that expression in the UK. We would usually say "portray" as you have suggested. As idioms and phrasal verbs are regional, it could be something used in other parts of the English world.

It is a common expression. It is a way of saying something figuratively. Yet, the meaning is: portray.
