Does "over three months" mean "for more than three month" or "for three months or more"? Hi, friends on italki. I found the following sentence in an advertisement of a serviced apartment in Bangkok. Does "over three months" mean "for more than three months" or "for three months or more"? Reduced rate s for occupancies of over three months. (rates from 3,000 baht weekly or 80,000 baht monthly) Please tell I can get a discounted rate if I book a room just for three months. I am not going to book the room actually, but I just want to know the exact meaning "over three months." Thank you for reading my question. I hope you could help me understand it. Best regards, Toru, Japan

It is my opinion that you can't really tell--and that if it is important, it is the writer's responsibility to use different words to make the meaning clear. In the context of an apartment rental, we are probably talking about a whole number of months. My guess is that the landlord wants to rent the apartment for at least four months. Four months is "more than three months." Three months is not "more than three months." In other words, John and Martin are correct... but it is quite possible that the person who wrote it meant "at least three months" and didn't phrase it well. Basically, you can't be sure without contacting the landlord.

In this context it means more than 3 months. If 3 months was the minimum it should say 3 or more months. If I said I lived here for over 3 months it would mean more than 3 but less than 4 months.

You are correct. It means for more than three months. This is a common mistake even among native english speakers and writers. "Over" is a geographic location loosely meaning "above". More than = greater than. You hear this mistake often. For example: "For over fifty years, Acme Company has provided great service" when it should be "For more than....
