Well, first you should know that thsi is swearing, on two counts, one is the 'damned' portion, and 'god' makes it a little extra offensive to some people who believe one should only speak about god in a good sense, not 'in vain'. (I am not complaining or ciriticizing, you should just understand how it sounds to people) So yes, Fede is right. It is an emphasized version of "I'll be damned" which means "Huh" or "I didn't know that, I'm surprised." For instance, if you found out that your old school friend (who never finished his homework) has become president of a large corporation, you might say that. It would express surprise and puzzlement. So then if you add 'god' to it, you are making it more emphasized, and showing that you are angry. Basically it is like adding extra swear words to the sentence to show you are angry. Since 'damned' is already in the sentence, adding 'god' is a way of adding extra swear words in. When I hear this expression, I think of an angry old man in an undershirt who is angry because he has lost, or has been proven wrong. He is admitting defeat, but isn't happy about it. But where does 'I'll be damned' come from? I'm not sure, except it seems related to an old expression 'Damn me for a liar if it isn't true.' Anyway, the verb 'damn' is almost never used in sentences any more (outside religion perhaps). The only exception would be in regard to evidence in a trial: "Fingerprints on a bloody knife proved to be damning evidence in the trial." BTW, if any italki admins are reading this, thank you very much for allowing us to discuss these 'impolite' words. It is very important for english learners to understand what they mean and how to use them (or not!) You can see we are serious and not just playing games. PS- be careful about posting topics with swear words in all caps, it makes it look bad! And we don't want to get in trouble with the site admins.
