solia se suele usar cuando estar recordando tiempos pasados (como para darle un poco de dramatismo a la situacion). Era se usa en un lenguaje mas rapido y coloquial. Ademas, solia se refiere a otra cosa algo diferente, por ejemplo (-Yo solia quitarme los zapatos antes de entrar) y era seria (-Yo era albañil). Era es mas correcto en ese contexto, pero creo que la unica forma de aprenderlo es hablando con hispano-hablantes.
