Ask permission/forgiveness vs Ask for permission/forgiveness (Which form is correct?)
I would like to know which form is the correct one to use "to ask permission/forgiveness" or "to ask FOR permission/forgiveness."
Examples:
1.a. You have to ask permission to leave.
1.b. You have to ask FOR permission to leave.
2.a. Susan asked his forgiveness.
2.b. Susan asked FOR his forgiveness.
If both forms are correct, which one is the most common?

Hola Jordi!
Ambas de las respuestas correctas son "b". Como ya sabes si estuvieramos hablando en español diríamos el verbo "pedir" en las oraciones arriba. El verbo pedir en ingles puede significar "to order" o "to ask for". (Nota que puse la palabra "for" después de "to ask" porque pedir siempre es "to ask for" Cuando traducimos el verbo "pedir" SIEMPRE va a ser "to ask for" y preguntar es cuando usamos solo las palabras "to ask."
Ejemplos: He asked for money
She asked her parents for a new car.
I asked for forgiveness.
You always ask for a new toy for Christmas
We always ask for extra towels when we stay at a hotel.
Espero que mi explinación te haya ayudado, si tienes más preguntas acerca del verbo "to ask for" No dudes en contactarme. Happy Learning!

As a non-professional teacher, but based on what I have heard and may say as a native speaker:
Ask "for" is grammatically correct and clear. However, I have definitely heard examples similar to 1a, "ask permission" without use of "for."
Example:
"You want to come over after school?"
"Let me call my parents first; I have to ask permission before I go to anyone's house."
"Ask forgiveness" without "for" I have also heard but less commonly.
Most likely there are regional variations in how common it is to use vs omit the "for." To be safe and grammatically correct, however, it is probably best to stick with saying "for" every time. Just be aware you may hear people skip it sometimes.
