I've never heard "turn short" before, but writers tend to use words more liberally. "Short" as an adverb can mean "abruptly/suddenly", e.g., "to stop short".

i have honestly never heard that before. but the context suggests to me it means "turn quick" or "turn sharp"...ie make a sharp, surprise turn in order to escape or avoid something. https://www.italki.com/paul_curley
