Because they love to hear themselves talk, and they think that they are always right! -You don't even understand the issue, you are arguing just for the sake of argument.

"For the sake of the argument" means you are putting forward a theory to test how the discussion could progress. What is important is that the theory doesn't need to be true or factual at all! For example: "For the sake of the argument, let's say the moon is made of jellybeans. Now could you agree that a moon-rock would taste sweet?" Totally fantastical, but you have come to a new possibility: moon-rocks could be sweet. If the moon were made of jellybeans, of course. ;) More practically: "For the sake of the argument, lets say that I am right. Would you now think my actions were justified?"
