Interesting question, I would probably just say something like "Hey, what's up guys?" or maybe something a bit more slangy, given the context.

You are correct that "goodnight" is only for saying goodbye (or for when you or somebody is going to sleep.)  It can't really be used to greet people, regardless of the time.

I personally rarely use "good morning" and never use "good afternoon/good evening."  I usually use "Hey, how's it going?" or "Hey, how are you (doing)?" regardless of the time of day.  It's OK to say "good morning/afternoon/evening" to greet somebody, it's just not something that I do.
