At the beginning, i use flash cards for simple vocabulary. Then for common expressions, putting them in context via reading a passage or watching a short video might be the best ways to understand their usage. However, to be able to use them, you need practices, either talking/chatting with others, or writing a daily journal might help. Practice makes perfect!

You would choose an English speaker who help you specifically with understanding expressions and word meanings.
