But nowadays we seldom celebrate our birthdays in that way. Sometimes we just go to the restaurant to have a dinner even without a birthday cake, because most of us don’t have the sense of ceremony after we grow up.

Using "the people" feels that you don't know them. But since you use "some friends" you can use the pronoun "they/them" (depending on the pronoun form) to refer to "some friends".
