A rendition of Charles Baudelaire's poem La Fontaine de sang, from his masterpiece Les Fleurs du Mal (edited by Poulet-Malassis, Paris,1857). It is a sonnet written in alexandrins (the famous french twelve-syllable verse, majestic and slow). The english translation is by William Aggeler (The Flowers of Evil, Academy Library Guild, Fresno, 1954). Enjoy !

旧記によると、仏像や仏具を打ち砕いて、
その丹がついたり金銀の箔がついたりした木を、
路ばたにつみ重ねて、薪の料に売っていた
という事である。
洛中がその始末であるから、羅生門の修理などは
元より誰も捨てて顧みる者がなかった。
するとその荒れ果てたのをよい事にして、
狐狸が棲む。盗人が棲む。とうとうしまいには、
引取り手のない死人を、この門へ持ってきて、
棄てていくという習慣さえできた。
そこで、日の目が見えなくなると、誰でも気味を
悪るがって、この門の近所へは足ぶみをしない事に
なってしまったのである。

In English exams like the IELTS test, there are speaking or writing questions that require critical thinking skills. If you feel weak in this area, you’re not alone. Many people do. There are many different aspects to critical thinking. It may be about using your knowledge to predict what consequences different actions will have. It may be about looking at information and then forming opinions or reaching conclusions. It may also be about understanding when some important information is missing, and being able to gather the extra information that you need. In your work life or student life, these skills are vital for finding solutions to problems. If you have them and can present your analyses to other people effectively, you will be a valued member of any forward-thinking team.
