In México its normal to say "friend" but you can say coloquially "compa" "cuate" :)

Pana, loco, mío, manin, tipo así aquí en mi tierra

Yeah, I know a lot of guys that will call each other "bud" or "man" or "bro" (as in "brother"). Even girls, if they are greeting a close male friend might say, "Hey man."

Two common words for this in the US are "buddy" and "pal." But more people simply say friend than use these other words.
